Defrost Freezer

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

These are our top defrost freezer tips. No matter how tidy your freezer is, sooner or later you will need to defrost it.

Over time excess ice builds up, affecting the efficiency of your freezer and increasing your electricity bills into the bargain. So how often should you defrost your freezer? Well, the answer to that is as often as possible but in practical terms you should aim to do it at least a few times a year or more if ice is accumulating very quickly. Every time you open the freezer door warm air gets into your freezer, and this will cause the freezer to work harder and create more ice. It’s very annoying but it’s how the freezer works, so you will have to take steps to deal with it.

So how do you defrost your freezer? Well, first of all it will take some planning beforehand. Ideally you should do it when there’s not much food left in there because it makes the job easier for you. Take out the remaining food and put it in a large bowl or storage box, covering it with a towel to keep it clean and hygienic. Now unplug the freezer from the socket and grab a large bowl. You will find that you will able to scrape of a lot of the softer ice very quickly with a flexible spatula made of rubber or plastic.

Do not use a heavy metal scraper as you could damage the walls of the freezer. Once you have removed all the ice you can, then put some boiling water in a bowl and stand it in the freezer with the door open.
After a short while the steam will start to melt the remaining ice and you can scrape it off with your spatula. You will probably be splashing a lot of melted ice around so make sure you have cloths on the floor to soak up any mess.

Freezer Temperature

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The ideal freezer temperature for optimal food safety is said to be below 0F or minus 18C.

If your freezer temperature is set at a higher level your food safety will not only be compromised but you will find your food simply doesn’t last as long.
It is not difficult to set the temperature on your freezer so make sure it is set correctly before putting food in it for the first time. Even if your food ins not spoilt by being stored at the wrong temperature you may find the texture is adversely affected, or it may just not taste as good as it should. The importance of food safety cannot be overemphasised, and quite simply you can end up in hospital if you get it wrong.

If you are in any doubt at all about the temperature settings you would do well to invest in a freezer thermometer. These are available from about $5 and will give you instant readings, thereby putting your mind at rest that the food is safe to eat.The best way to use the thermometer is by placing it between two items such as bagged vegetables. A digital readout is easy to understand and will give you immediate results. You can also buy a thermometer which gives you weekly average readings. These cost around $25 and enable you to monitor the temperature on a regular basis. When it comes to your freezer temperature you don’t want to be making mistakes which can affect your health or ruin your monthly shopping budget either.

Freezer Food Storage

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Freezer food storage enables you to buy and store larger amounts of produce than you would be able to do otherwise.

Not only can you buy your food in advance but you will also be able to take advantage of special offers on meat, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables. There is not doubt that freezers are an excellent way of storing food, and saving yourself some money into the bargain. When it comes to frozen food you can either buy ready frozen food in a large variety of stores, or you can buy fresh food and freeze it yourself.

If you are a keen gardener who grows a lot of apples for instance, you will be able to enjoy eating them all year round rather than only when they are in season. Frozen food offers another advantage in terms of your health; by freezing your fruit and vegetables you are guaranteed a supply of Vitamin C all year round, which can only be a good thing for you or your family. So when it comes to buying freezer food what should you look for? Well, if you are in the habit of buying prepared food in supermarkets you will find plenty of special offers in the frozen section. There are always offers like “buy one, get one free” to tempt you, so why not buy one to eat now and keep the other one in the freezer to eat later?

You can also buy larger cuts of meat, fish and poultry, and these are ideal when planning a family budget. You will find it is a lot cheaper in the long run to invest in a large amount of fish which can then be used throughout the coming months, rather than buying fish weekly at a higher unit cost. Freezer food is not only healthy, it is also very economical.

Freezer Storage

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Most modern households will find it very difficult to function these days without some form of freezer storage.

The most economical way to buy groceries is to buy them in bulk as this helps to reduce the unit price. You may be tempted to buy in bulk to save costs but before you do you need to consider the practicalities of where you are going to store your excess food.Freezer storage is undoubtedly one of the best ways of buying large amounts of food to keep for a later date. When it comes to choice there are basically two styles of freezer, and these are the chest freezer and the upright freezer

For low to medium freezer storage capacity you may prefer to invest in an upright freezer. This resembles a refrigerator in shape and size and is normally situated in a domestic or commercial kitchen. For ease of convenience the upright freezer is ideal, especially for older people as there is no bending required; simply open the door and select the products required just as you would with a refrigerator. This type of freezer storage is ideal for storing pre-cooked foods, either homemade or shop bought, and there are usually shelves so you can separate the food into categories.

One of the disadvantages of an upright freezer is the limited capacity it offers. You may find you can only store a certain amount of food because of the amount of space available. Certainly you will need to plan your shopping and cooking very carefully to ensure you date rotate your items; using the oldest ones first and moving the newest items to the back. A single person or couple will probably find this kind of freezer storage is more than sufficient for their needs but a family may need something bigger, such as a chest freezer. The smaller size also means you cannot take advantage of some of the bulk buy offers available in stores. It is all very well deciding to buy two or more of the same item to save money but you need to think carefully about where they are going to fit before making your purchases.

The advantage of an upright freezer is the food can be clearly seen as soon as you open the door. With this kind of freezer storage everything is usually at eye level so you can see what you want almost immediately. This can be ideal for busy single people or couples who need to cook their evening meals as quickly as possible after a long day’s work. The best upright freezers use drawers which you can slide out to examine the contents quickly and easily.

Another kind of upright freezer is commonly known as the fridge freezer and as the name suggests offers a combination of fridge and freezer storage within one unit. In most designs the refrigerator will be at the bottom with the freezer sited on top, and both will open separately with their own doors. This kind of arrangement can be helpful in a very small kitchen but unless you are a single person who does not buy a lot of frozen food you will find the storage capacity seriously limiting.

Finally we come onto chest freezers. These are, as the name suggests, chest-like in shape. The door will be located on top of the freezer rather than the front, making it impossible to situate the freezer under a kitchen worktop for instance. This form of freezer storage will need its own dedicated space and unless you have a large kitchen you will need to keep it elsewhere, such as in a utility room or garage. Chest freezers come in a variety of sizes, and the smaller ones can at first glance resemble an upright freezer.  However, as we have already noticed, chest freezers have their lids on the top so you will need to measure the space available in your kitchen or other room before buying.

Regardless of the size of the chest freezer, one major advantage they all offer is the increased capability for storage.  You will be able to buy not just larger amounts of pre-prepared food if you wish, but also large cuts of meat, fish, and bags of vegetables. Chest freezers are ideal for families, and they help enormously when planning the food budget.
